I can see the light in Pashedbast's office from here, the empty city is so dark. And empty. The few local farmers have been spending some time each day clearing rumble from the temple and streets. Several women have been cleaning out the Nomarch's "palace" and her scribe's "manor." At least we have found some leftover plaster and pigments, we will be bravely colored at least. My poor sesh, he too suffers from seeing our beloved city in such a state. I am glad now that his family didn't accompany him and remain in Men-nefer. I too, have happy, childhood memories of my birth city and they flicker in and out with a sharp pain. Father moved us to Waset and beyond before I was eight years old but Per-Bast has always been home in my mind. How odd that both our mothers' served here in the temple, though a decade apart. Or perhaps, not…to the mind of a Netjert.
My dear Maximus laid out his plans for the re-born Per-Bast on a broken pedestal to discuss them with us. (link to map). I must say it is almost too organized for the child Basteta but the adult sees the logic behind the plan. And instead of redigging the channels that flanked the temple, Maximus proposes to surround the city with a canal for water and transportation. The Arms of Bast he has called it. The temple has a few walls standing though much of the stone wasn't removed from the site, many building are still standing throughout town. I need an architect, a physician, a army of stone masons…ENOUGH. I must think of what Bast has provided me to work with instead.
I have heard from Tija Sithathor in Dja'net and I am to assist her in overseeing the caravan routes that pass through Per-Bast and her sister city. The tavern keeper of the Ambrosia in Dja'net is interested in opening another tavern here and my father-in-law will fund it with a legacy left him by Osiris Cleopatra VII, whom he served during Julius Caesar's time in Kemet. A young woman named Terra has sent us a scroll declaring her intention to live in Per-Bast. And there has been an overseer appointed for Lower Kemet and she is already known to me. Persenti knows our plight and will help bring the city to the attention of the Vizer and Pharoah.
Perhaps Pashedbast's family will arrive soon, it will be good to hear the laughter of children here again.

Greetings Basteta!
I am very excited at the opportunity to expand my hospitality services into your city of Per'Bast! I know that this is a very busy time for you, with all you have to do to rebuild and renovate the city. However, I am hoping that you will have time to show me your city in a week's time, when I journey from Dja'net to Per'Bast. I am off to Imet in a day or so, to begin setting up my second tavern there, then I will be making my journey to your fair city. I look forward to examining the proposed location for my third tavern "The Lyre and The Sistrum", and to be a part of the resurrection of this noble city! Until we meet in a week's time....
Be Well!

Coughing up dust and bleeding at the knees, I seated myself on what once might have been a pedestal. I wondered idly what my Netjert might think of her priestess crawling about her temple in a roman tunic and heavy, roman sandals. Fine linen would never survive this, however appropriate for my position. The remains of the temple of Bast lie flung about me: toppled and broken statues, piles of colored plaster, bricks, and three days ago—bodies.
One of the ex-legionnaires that accompanied my husband and I to Kemet came to fetch me saying a priestess was required in the inner temple. Full of fear I rushed to find Maximus standing near the entrance to the inner sanctum, fury plain upon his face. He grabbed my arm to keep me from going any further. He said, "Hemet-netjer-net Bast, a terrible crime has been committed here." Taking my arm, we headed for the sanctum.
"Maximus, you can’t enter—"
"I won’t have to, Basteta." I stood up on tip-toe and peered over his shoulder. "No! oh, no, dearest Goddess!" At the threshold of the ruined sanctum two priests had remained on guard, but were now crucified and partly burnt to disfigured the bodies. Cries of horror from the workmen who followed us echoed through the ruins. "Damned Roman animals," cursed one man. His fellows began to wail and throw dust upon themselves. "Damned animals but not worthy of being ROMAN," snarled Maximus. "No decent man would do this, and certainly not to priests!" I said, "What can we do now? How do we bury these brave ones with no faces?" I began to cry at the terrible fate visited on my fellow priests. The oldest of the legionnaires, Titus, bowed before me "Priestess, we, will bring these brave ones down and wrap the bodies while you offer prayers. The workmen can build a cairn to protect them for now."
I agreed and sent two men for some large baskets we had emptied of grain. Hot sand was scooped into the bottom and then around each body as they were placed inside the baskets. A workman brought incense and a small burner to place atop the cairn. I lit the incense, and begged the Netjer to aid these lost ones.
Incense still burned today as I passed, supplied by both the workmen and the legionnaires. They had informed me that the desecraters were theirs to find. Letters were sent to Rome to family and friends requesting any word on the siege at Per-Bast. I had more horrors to face for when finishing theinspection of sanctum and storerooms, I found them looted and the sacred image of Bast missing. What had been her barque and shrine lay in splinters throughout the area, stripped of the gold and jeweled adornments.
Indeed, all that remains of the temple besides a few small votive figures now adorning the priests’ cairn are two paintings on separate pylons. One is Osiris Osorkon I making an offering and the other Osiris Cleopatra VII doing the same. It is with a heavy heart and tears flowing that I rose and returned to my office. I alone must deal with this crisis, for there is no other with the High Priestess away on work for the Netjer. My first task would be to write the Per’aa and deliver this grievous news.

To The Living Isis, She of the Sedge and the Bee, The Lioness Protecting From Evil, The Uniter of the Two Lands, Daughter of Amun, Per’aa Nesnut Hatshepsut, Life! Health! Prosperity!
The cleanup and restoration of Per-Bast continues, though our resources and supplies are small. Help has been offered by the city of Dja’net to restore the trades routes that enriched Kemet in years past. I ask that the Vizier of the Two Lands visit to see with his own eyes and to better report to you the conditions of your city. The people are slowly returning to your city and taking up their lives. However, little of the temple of the Netjert Bast remains standing, the sacred grove has been felled, and Her sacred image is missing. Today a letter arrived appointing me Hemet-netjer-tepet net Bast and I shall do all that may be done to restore ma’at in Per-Bast.
I grieve to report the deaths by crucifixion and fire of two priests of the Netjert Bast during the looting of Per-Bast five years ago. Nothing could be found to give names to these brave ones, I ask for your prayers and those of all Kemet for the lost ones. The remains have been secured to the best of our ability in the hope that we may some day build them a house of eternity.
I remain your devoted servant in all things, Basteta Meritamen, Hatey-a’of the 18th Nome of Lower Egypt, Heret-tep-Per-Bast, Hemet-netjer-tepet net Bast

Em hotep!
May this message find you well, although I realize there are many hardships in your city of Per-Bast. I realize we have spoken before, and I am contacting you about my thoughts on this. I know that Per-Bast is in need of rebuilding, and I wish to help all that I can.
As you know, I am a sculptor. I truly live for this work, and using it to help with your city would be an honor. The temples I'm sure can have plenty of work done, and I feel I can be settled in quite soon if all goes well. Then I hope to become aquainted with the citizens and learn about everyone, as I hope you will learn about me.
If everyone agrees, I am anxious to live in your city. Ahemnatiya

Even with such dark things happening, the Netjert send their light and aid to their people. Three marvelous things have happened this day.
I have learned that Ryveria Aristophanes is coming in a weeks’ time to select her new tavern site and begin preparations to open for business. She has decided on The Lyre and The Sistrum without knowing how perfect a name that is for Per-Bast, the sistrum being Her instrument.
A letter has arrived from the King’s Lector Priest naming me Hemet-netjer-tepet net Bast. This has given me much more authority in dealing with temple matters so that I may serve Her fully.
Word has come of two new arrivals, Ahemnatiya Hatshepsut, a sculptor and ubastet Sithathor who wishes to serve in the temple. Both are sorely needed and may Bast bless them both and speed their arrival, they have lifted a great weight from my heart.

When I first arrived in Per'Bast, I could not get used to all of the activity. Workers and weavers, brickmakers and sculptors, scribes and priests, women and children filled the streets busily going about their duties. There seemed no drudgery here, however, they all walked with light steps, calling greetings, smiling and laughing. Roman guards dotted the city, vigilant in their watch, but the local people did not seem to resent their presence, quite the opposite, in fact. I found it refreshing and reassuring, as a Greek still fairly new to Egypt, I was still unsure of my reception among the local populace.
As I sat composing a letter to my old friend Platos who was managing my tavern in Dja'net in my absence, my mind wandered back to my meeting with Basteta the day I arrived. My first impression of her had been that she was a woman who radiated determination and conviction. I had heard talk on the streets as I made my way to her office about the horrific discovery of the murdered priests in the ruins of the Temple. I knew she was deeply saddened and upset at this turn of events, but she did not seem inclined to allow that to alter her purpose. I admired her for that, and for all she and her husband Maximus' had done so far to the city and would yet accomplish.
She had welcomed me warmly and put me instantly at ease, eagerly showing me the city plan and speaking animatedly about the restorations and improvements. She showed me the site of my new tavern, explaining the convenience of being across from most of the main shops in the city. I agreed it would make a perfect site and I could not wait to see it and begin making plans. Her husband Maximus had arrived then and upon introduction to him I could not mistake his strength of character or his natural leadership. I had to admit to myself that Basteta had the perfect partner to help her with the massive endeavor that restoring Per'Bast would be.
Unable to escort me to my new tavern since she still had meetings to attend, Basteta lent me one of her scribes to show me the way. In truth it was not a very long walk and soon I was standing in front of my new tavern. Releasing the scribe back to his numerous duties to Basteta, I inspected the spacious cooking area and large main dining room with pleasure. I could even picture a perfect spot to provide music and entertainment easily viewed by the entire room. Climbing to the second floor I was pleased to see that there were 6 rooms for overnight guests, 4 of which gave excellent views of the city. Rubbing my hands excitedly together, I could not wait to begin!
"Nebet?" a voice brought me back to the present. I turned to face Kheti, my manager-in-training.
"Yes Kheti, what is it?" I smiled at the older man, still so hesitant in his behaviour.
"There are three more women here to be interviewed for position of cook," he announced.
"Thank you Kheti, give me but a few moments to finish my letter, and we can begin," I told him.
He gave me a small bow and walked away to give me privacy.
I had been here only a few weeks and accomplished so much, but I still had so much to do. I definitely needed to have an urgent conversation with the man who supplied me with food and wine, because I was going to need so very much more! Kheti had already told me that everyone in the city was eagerly looking forward to the opening of my tavern and I did not want to disappoint them. I felt I could do no less than provide the best food and drink to all of the citizens in the city, who worked so hard for so great a purpose.

Greetings old friend!
I wish that you could have journeyed to Per'Bast with me so that you could see this magnificent place and feel the excitement! It is not terribly difficult to picture how this legendary city once commanded great admiration!
I have met with Basteta Meritamen who is mayor and nomarch here and with her husband Maximus' help they will not only return Per'Bast to it's former glory, but the improvements are breathtaking!
Workers are scarce as Basteta has most of them working on the temple of Bast which lies in ruins, but I have found two brothers who will help me renovate the site of my new tavern, The Lyre and The Sistrum. I am working with my new manager Kheti and interviewing servers and cooks. I am pleasantly surprised at how well the locals are embracing the idea of learning Greek food preparation, which I suspect has to do with Maximus' influence. I have even been approached by the mother of a Roman guard stationed here, to prepare Roman food to add to the menu!
I will be leaving here in a few days time and will stop in Imet before returning to Dja'net. You can reach me there in a week's time. I cannot wait to tell you all about my visit here!
Be Well!

To the Honored NeferWhinny, greetings
I am Basteta Meritamen, Nomarch of the 18th Nome of Lower Egypt and Mayor of Per-Bast. It is known throughout Kemet that the family of Hatshepsut breeds the finest horses in the Two Lands. I require a matched pair of horse fine enough for a nomarch's chariot but versatile enough for riding as well. My entire stable consists of four Roman cobs that are not suitable for this task.
I invite you to bring such a pair of horses to Per-Bast and also offer you the opportunity to set up a business here to supply the cities' horses. As there are few horses in town you might wish to bring a selection for various uses to be sold in the market square. I think you will be very satisfied with the profits from those sales.
Senebty,

After finishing my evening meal at the tavern ran by the lovely lady by the named of Ryveria Aristophanes, I walked into my new office, surveying the room I felt it was time to send for my wife and children. They had stayed in the comfort of our Men-nefer home while I started my office here. This was not the office I walked into months earlier. The state of disrepair was unbelievable. I was born in Per-Bast my mother served as a priestess in the temple. When I was a year old my father whisked us away to live in Men-nefer. Per-Bast fell into ruins. Now Per-Bast was not the city I found a months earlier. Our clever mayor(my boss)is dedicated to restoring Per-bast to the beautiful city I remembered as a child. Buildings that were in ruins due to the war are being rebuilt, many boarded homes now restored with families inside. Jobs and opportunities are limitless. My family home is ready and waiting for the laughter of my wife and children. Basteta had made arrangements for them to travel on the first available boat head this way. Kenamun would be packed and ready I knew, she was always ready weeks in advance of a deadline. As Ra dropped behind the horizon I light a lantern in my office before returning to my home, I sit down at my desk and begin a letter to by beloved wife.
Aw ibetj Kenamun I hope the gods smile favorable upon you and our children. This will be the last letter you receive from me, as you will receive it in route to our new home in Per-Bast...

I have arrived in Per-Bast in one piece. See you worried for nothing. The city is comin along beautifully. The massive reconstruction effort is being handled with grace and dignity by our nomarch, Basteta Meritamen. Oh brother, you would love her. She reminds me so much of mother, before the illnes took her. She is strong yet she is comforting and reassuring. She holds such vision for Per-Bast. I can't wait to meet everyone in the city especially Basteta's husband, everyone speaks so highly of him. I was welcomed in the late evening(as my caravan was running behind schedule) at our Hatet'a(nomarchs) palace. She has offered me shelter their until the temple is rebuilt. She let me see the plans for the new temple. It is going to be a grand structure and I get to call it home. Guess what dear brother...OK I don't have time to wait on an answer. My training in the appointments of Bast shall come to fruition. I have been made godservant in the temple of Bast. I shall petition the King Lector's Priest Office soon for a position in the priesthood. Wish me luck! The light from the lamp is hurting my eyes and the stars are hanging heavy tonight so I must go. Tjia sat in her office with elbows on her desk and her head held in her hands. She took a deep breath and sighed, her scribe Kakra had quit her position due to her mother's health was failing. Tjia was at a lost with out her dutiful scribe. The temporary scribe had quit as well running off to bigger and better things in Waset. Huy was filling in as best he could but he was well into is seventies and just could not move as fast as the younger scribes and he only work part time, every other day. Tjia thought to herself if I don't get another scribe soon, I will be up to my ears in back logged paper work. She sigh again and then signed some official papers for the up coming Opet Festival and wrote a message to the chief priestess of Amun, Ankheri Senwosret. There came a gentle knock on the door. "Enter." Tjia said.
"Mistress, the Lebanese Cedar you order as a gift to temple of Bast has arrived." Huy said smiling. He handed her a message from the vizier's office.
"Good send a message to Per-Bast, telling Mayor Basteta that I will send the cedar to the temple at the weeks end, and I will then travel mid week coming for a visit with her."
"Very well mistress." Huy said in agreement.
Tjia quickly unrolled the message and read out loud to Huy, From the office of Vizier. Ahktenar Mutemwiya, Honorable Hatey-a' of the 19th Nome of Lower Egypt, Heret-tep-Dja'net, Tjia Sithathor let it be known that the new appointed Vizier Ahktenar Mutemwiya is arriving in your fair city of Dja'net tomorrow when Ra meets the horizon to begin his daily journey. "Huy, send a message to Mayor Persenti that the vizier will be arriving in the morning." she said as she rolled the scroll up and layed it on her desk. "We will want his visit to be a wonderful one. Make sure the museum staff know of his visit as well and also send a message to the chief priest and priestess. They will want to be aware too." she said pacing back and forth. Huy nodded his gray head and left the room.

Seated in a back corner of the Lyre and Sistrum and sipping a glass of fine wine, Basteta mused about the events of the past few weeks. “I miss Ryveria," she thought, now that she has returned to Dja’net. I learned more about Per-Bast in the several weeks she was here than in all the time I have been here. “ The tavern mistress’s face appeared in her thoughts "always a welcome smile and a laugh with that one. I could contain myself at the look on her face when we toured the site I had chosen for the tavern. That it was a jewel of a site was apparent even to me." Work was swiftly completed and the tavern opened to great acclaim in Per-Bast, a welcome respite for all levels of society. “I fully expect her to have a tavern in Sile as word of her establishments continues to spread and much as I enjoy the wine, it is her friendship and keen observations I have missed the most."
A smile lit the Nebet’s face remembering another surprise arrival in town a short time after Ryveria had left for home. Retired General Gaius Maximus strode into the tavern one afternoon calling for beer and loudly lamenting the famed Ryveria’s absence. Basteta’s father-in-law had arrived with livestock, flowers and trees for transplanting, servants from his estate, several more guards, trunks of scrolls and mementos, and the widowed mother of one new man. “Mother" Aurelia was swiftly installed in the barracks wing of the nomarch’s palace after deciding the whole guard corp needed looking after. Within half a day she had inspected the Lyre and Sistrum (since her boys were eating there,) approved it and requested roman food. At dinner that night we learned that Gaius Maximus was finally so disgusted with Maximus’s mother Fulvia, that he divorced her and then signed over his Roman estates to the elder son, Gaius. A legacy left the general by Osiris Cleopatra VII will either purchase an estate here in Kemet or go to founding a new business in Per-Bast.
Kheti appeared at the Nomarch’s table with two beers and she looked up to find both her Gaius Maximuses had arrived at the tavern. Pater was dressed in the new uniform he had brought for the city guard, a blue tunic overlayed with a green linen kilt and bearing a standing, yellow cat upon the breast. The same cat has been placed upon the basics legionnaires shield in bronze to complete the gear. Basteta ogled her father-in-law to his delight. Gaius Maximus had offered to act as Chief of Police/the Guard temporarily but expects to be replaced soon so he can spend his retirement at the Lyre and Sistrum, drinking beer and flirting with Ryveria when she is in residence. Basteta had felt comfortable in relating the Greek woman’s impressions of the city and its’ people to the Chief. “I wonder if she is in the market for a husband?" Basteta thought, “I must ask Tjia in my next letter." Chief scribe Pashedbast made a fourth for dinner and silently amused the others as he fretted about the arrival of his wife Kenamun and their children. The nomarch had extra workmen put to the task of readying his home and arranged for the fastest travel possible. “And he is still pacing the office between letters," she giggled to herself. “I must remember to tell him the children can have run of the palace gardens." The party broke up and headed for home and well-deserved rest.

After a letter had arrived from Nomarch Lotus Horemheb about forming an artisans guild with offices throughout Kemet, Basteta decided to speak with both the new sculptor in charge of the temple statues, Ahemnatiya Hatshepsut, and a new Priestess of Bast, named Ubastet Sithathor, whose family were sculptors. Once both had arrived we discussed the offer and I asked each to consider joining the guild so that we might have an office here in Per-Bast. The details were sketchy at the time but both women seemed interested. Moments after their departure, Pashedbast appeared with a newly arrived letter from Tjia Sithathor, Nomarch and Mayor of Dja’net and a dear friend of the Nebet. The Vizier of all Kemet has visited Dja’net and will soon arrive in Per-Bast. a gift of Lebanese cedar to the temple and will be arriving with it in a few days time. He was rather disgruntled to find a formal reception awaiting him. “Perhaps, I shall just meet him at the gate myself," she thinks, “and take him to the Lyre and Sistrum." Lowering the papyrus Basteta summoned Pashedbast and requested a note be sent to Kheti, the tavern manager asking for several rooms and no ceremony for the Vizier. Word is also to be spread of his coming so that the people may approach him with their concerns. “I do hope he can help us to find a permanent Chief of Police and a Master Gardener before Our Lady’s festival," Basteta remarks to the scribe, “there ought to be plenty of capable people in the Pera’a’s court."
Reading the rest of the letter Tjia imparts that she is traveling to Per-Bast soon and will be bringing a gift of Lebanese cedar for the temple. Such a wonderful gift can be put to good use in constructing a new shrine and barge for the Netjert. “Perhaps Ubastet will be use her talents for those tasks," she thinks, “and what a joyous surprise the young priestess has been since her arrival." Her first morning in town she prayed at the Unknown Priests Tomb, wreathing it with flowers and singing praises to Bast. The guards and the many townspeople who have taken to keeping the incense burning as a constant prayer to the Netjeru were greatly pleased by Ubastet’s actions. By evening the message that she had been granted the position of Wa’eb Priestess to Bast arrived at the palace. Installed now in a suite in the palace, the young priestess had made the prayer ceremony a daily part of her duties. “I must discuss with her creating the design and she if she can work in wood," Basteta thought, “though she may not too much time for her devotions once Pashebast’s children discover her. That one will end up “auntie" to every child in town and “mother" of every miew in the temple."

“Nebet?" I looked up at Pashedbast’s inquiry, “the Overseer of the Perfumery of Bast, Ahmose Amenemhat is here as you requested." “Shown her in, please Pashedbast, and ask for tea and honey cakes for us." Garbed in linen the color of new leaves Ahmose bowed to me and accepted the chair I offered her. “You wish to speak to me Nebet?" I smiled and continued, “I am so pleased with the progress you have made with the perfumery is such a short time. We will soon have a chance to meet with the Vizier of Kemet and I would like you to give him a list of what you need to help in this endeavor. Perfume is one of our greatest products and I wish it to be available throughout Kemet again. I am sure there are cuttings that can be requested from the Pera’a’s or the various temple gardens throughout the land to help restore the flower farms. I hope to bring to the Vizier’s attention that we need glassblowers and potters to package your wares."
Ahmose smiled and I could almost see her mind working. “Of course all of the personal orders will be handled through your shop Nefer Pet, the supplies coming straight from the main perfumery stocks at no cost to you. We haven’t discussed it but 30% of all profits from the bulk orders will be your fee as Overseer." That got a gasp and a happy smile from the lovely merchant. “The rest will go to restoring and maintaining the temple, some to be provided in actual goods."
Thinking a moment I added, “what do you know about making incense, Ahmose? Is that an area we can venture into?" She pondered that question and promised to make inquiries when I offered that I had a small gift to invest.
“There is one, last item of business to discuss. The Opet Festival will be held soon in Dja’net and if possible I would like to present Amun with a gift of the first, new perfumes and ointments from the people of Per-Bast. And I wish to have several vials to present to the Nomarch, the Mayor of Imet, and tavern mistress Ryveria. The way word travels about her taverns we will be world renown by the end of the year. “ Laughter concluded that meeting and I went back to the endless stack of papyrus waiting on my desk.

It was late, Ra had pushed behind the horizon three hours passed, Pashedbast sat at his office desk reviewing a letter to Mayor Tjia in Dja'net in regard to her up coming visit. He also had some documents to get ready for the up coming Festival of Bast. The good mayor of Dja'net was coming to pay homage to the Great Goddess Bast, she was also a good friend of Mayor Basteta and thus Pashedbast wanted all to be perfect. He had informed the new priestess Ubastet that Mayor Tjia would be sending a splendid gift of prize Lebanese cedar, the young priestess was happy to hear of the up coming gift, and had mention she knew just what the wood would be used for. Ubastet was a friendly young woman from a good family it was always a pleasure meeting with her. Speaking of meetings the new Overseer of Perfumery, Ahmose was due in Basteta's office in the morning to review some paperwork with him. She was a lovely woman and when she entered a room the aroma of her work followed her, Pashedbast jotted down a note he wanted to ask Ahmose to suggest a fragrance to give his wife Kenamun. She and the children would arrive any day and he wanted to surprise her with the gift. He kept forgetting to stop in Per Nefer and pick a bottle up. It was then Pashedbast heard a loud crash on the second floor above him. It was the room where the city apprentice scribes performed their duties. Pashedbast rushed upstairs and found two apprentice scribes standing in a puddle of ink. With ink on their faces and kilts the pair bowed their heads when Pashedbast entered the room.
One of the young boys spoke "Master Pashedbast, I can explain, Amen and me were just cleaning up and the tray of ink just tilled a bit and then the broom came out from no where and hit his arm and then the tray it started to spin and..."
"Enough." Pashedbast said raising his hand to silence the rambling story of the boy. Knowing from experience the young boys were probably engaged in horse play when the accident happened. "I am displeased with your actions and Mayor Basteta will be greatly displeased." Pashedbast thought for a minute scratching his bald head. In the scribal school the boys would have been given the rod, but Pashedbast with his soft heart always hated giving the rod. "You two are to clean this mess up. It is not to show a spot of ink. I then will see you in my office in the morning to discuss your punishment for this laps of judgment."
The two boys bow and said in unison "Yes Master Pashedbast."
Pashed turned and left the room and thought to himself "Boys."

I stood at the bow of my ship, as it approached the city of Bubastis, or as they were calling it again, Per-Bast. I hoped that I was doing the right thing in moving the headquarters for my shipping business here.
When I met Maximus and his wife Basteta, they were charming people. They described their hopes and expectaction for their new city. I admit that I was charmed by their vision, as well. After corresponding with them and finding out a few things about the city, I decided to come here.
The ship I stand on carries only the first of my goods. I've brought only those needed to set up the warehouse, and to find or build homes for my people. The other ships will arrive later with goods and supplies.
As the city comes into view, Ifind myself looking forward to this venture.
Message: A delivery and a letter for Basteta...
Author: Tavern Owner - Ryveria Aristophanes

Basteta and Maximus were enjoying lunch in the garden outside her office, going over how the day's work was proceeding when they were interrupted by a soft cough. Looking up, Basteta saw her head scribe waiting a discreet distance away.
"Yes Pashedbast, what is it?" she asked him.
"My pardon for intruding Nebet, but I thought you would want to speak to someone who has come from Dja'net sent by Ryveria Aristophanes," he bowed slightly.
"Ryveria? Good gods, what is this about? Send him to me," she directed.
It was only moments before a dusty young man shuffled into the garden, nervously grasping a papyrus scroll. He seemed to freeze when he saw Maximus leaning casually back in his chair, an air of watchfulness about him. He looked like a dove caught too close to a cobra.
Basteta motioned the young man closer and after a few moments, he obeyed. He bowed respectfully to her and handed her the scroll, all the while keeping sight of Maximus from the corner of his eye.
Eagerly unrolling the scroll, Basteta quickly read the short message:
Greetings Basteta!
I hope this letter and this present find you happy and well. The bearer of this scroll has delivered to you a wagonload of Greek Irises to aid your perfumery. Not only do they provide a fine fragrance on their own, but they also act as an excellent fixative, strengthening the perfume of other flowers or mixtures.
There is also a few plants that will seem strange to you, that were originally brought from the East by caravan. They are called Gardenia and I think you will love their incredible scent as much as I do. They are a much more fragile plant than the Irises, so you must take care to plant them out of the harsh desert sun and keep them moist.
I hope that you like and can use my gift. I will be returning to Per'Bast soon and look forward to catching up on all that has gone on in my absence. My best regards to Maximus and your father-in-law.
Be Well...
Ryveria
"Maximus! She sent a wagonload of flowers for the perfumery!" Basteta told him excitedly. "She has also included some strange bloom from the Far East that I've never heard of but she says I'll love it. I'm going to check the wagon, are you going to come?"
Maximus declined with a singular lack of interest, amused that she was so excited over a bunch of silly flowers.
On her way to the courtyard in front of her office, Basteta spoke again briefly with the driver of the wagon. She discovered that he had a small delivery to pick up from The Lyre and The Sistrum and would be returning to Dja'net in a few days. She promised to have a reply sent to him at the tavern before he left, for him to deliver to Ryveria. Perhaps as a thank you, she'd include a few bottles of perfume.....

My ship docks at Per-Bast on a fine clear day. My first task will be to send word to the mayor's office that I have arrived. I will have to arrange an appointment to goa around and fill out whatever forms are needed, and pay whatever fees that are necessary.
In the meantime, my men and I shall scout around the city for suitable warehouse, shop space, and living quarters.

“Really!?" I wanted to throw my arms around our nomarch. But I contained my feelings of gratitude. “Yes and Tija will be sending some Lebanese cedar to be incorporated into the shrine" Basteta stated with a calm exterior. I couldn’t help but give her a look of excitement and concern.
My shrine and altar of givings for Bast was to be placed inside our great temple! Right across from the shrine of the unknown priests! This meant that all would see it upon entering the temple. I am elated. This is such an honor. Should I build a statue of Bast the cat or Bast the cat headed god? Should she , “the lover of laps", be standing or sitting? Should it be stone or wood with gold inlay; maybe some faience should be used? It is cheaper and I am sure that the money can be used elsewhere. There are so many worthy causes in our town. There are so many buildings to be reborn. Surely we can splurge a little on this shrine. Maybe we can find a venerable benefactor to donate some granite or marble. Maybe even some red sandstone. That would be lovely. Oh no! What if my abilities are seriously lacking for this big of an undertaking? What if it turns out to be a big eyesore?
The smile starts to slowly fade from my face. Basteta with concern in her eyes asks me if I am okay........she starts to rise from her seat behind the desk. “Don’t get me wrong “ I choke out “your faith in me is a true testament to your noble spirit, but I am not sure if I can handle a job of this magnitude." She smiles and sits down with a sigh. Relieved that I am okay, she chuckles softly and gives me a warm smile and begins her pep talk.
An hour later I leave with a renewed sense of enthusiasm over this project. Basteta can do wonders with a troubled and unsure soul. I have to hurry. I know the miews at the temple are hungry. I was supposed to feed them an hour ago.

I await my new city in anticipation. We see another ship in harbor; it is preparing to make way. We have come down the river over a period of many days, and, frankly, boat rides do not settle well with me, or I with them. I am definitely unsettled of stomach. I will be glad to be disembarking, if for no other reason than this.
But, after months of correspondence with the Mayor of Per-Bast, Basteta, I am certain I will like it here. Indeed, what I see of this city is reassuring. Not too large, not too small -- a woman can certainly settle down and make her roots here.
I disembark, my servants attending to my material goods, as well as to the few goats and cats that travel with me.
I have made arrangements to live in a place in this city; I understand that it is near, but not too near, the tavern. On steady ground, I take a deep breath of the air of my homeland, and give thanks to all the Gods, especially my patron, to whose city I have arrived, Bast.
I am glad to walk on steady ground, so in lieu of any other transportation, I walk with my entourage to my new per.

Ahmose moved around the perfumery inspecting the batches of exotic fragrances. "How about this one mistress", one of the workmen said, Ahmose sniffed the cork dispenser that the worker held out for her to smell. Ahmose said as she sniffed. 'No, that needs another week's soaking before it is ready."
The overseer of workers walked up and bowed. He said "Mistress, The Red Camel fragrance appears ready." Ahmose and the workers walked to the area reserved for The Red Camel. A worker in that department helded a cork to her nose. "Yes, this batch is ready to bottle." Several workers moved to the vat and marked it with Ahmose's seal. The vat would then be taken to the bottling area where the precious fragrance would be bottled in a beautiful and costly container.
A perfumery scribe entered the container room, "Mistress, there is a visitor in your office. It is the mayors scribe Pashedbast. Ahmose nodded and said, "Tell him I will be right with him." Ahmose looked over the account scrolls and told the worker overseer if he found any more vats he believed were ready to let her know.
Ahmose entered her office and found a nervous Pashedbast pacing. "Good day to you good scribe. How may I help you?" Pashedbast replied, "I am in great need of a fragrance as a gift for my wife. You see she is due here any day and I won't to make her arrival very special."
Ahmose smiled, "Well you have come to the right place and I have just the fragrance, it is my own design, I call it The Red Camel, I won't disclose what I used to make it but I think you will find it delightful and a wonderful gift for your wife. We are bottling it today. I will send some to your office in the morning along with a sample to for the mayor."
Pashedbast smiled and thanked the perfumer. As she walked him to the perfumery courtyard a worker came up. "Mistress, we have found another vat that needs your approval." Ahmose sighed and bid farewell to her visitor and turned and went back inside the perfumery. She was thankful she moved to Per-Bast to take the position Mayor Basteta had offered her as the Overseer of the Perfumery. She truly enjoyed her position and Per-Bast turned out to be the most wonderful city she had lived. She truely felt at home here.

The young man wearing the guard uniform of Per-Bast stood in the tavern’s doorway for a moment and then walked to the bar where he inquired after Nebet Ryveria. Platos sent a girl to fetch her and when the Greek woman arrived, the guard bowed and presented with a letter and a small, wooden box.
“Mistress of Taverns,
In thanks for the fabulous gift of flowers I shall stop trying to marry you off to my father-in-law. Indeed, dear friend, your heart is as great as the sky above. A few of each plant shall go to the new temple gardens in your name, and the first bottle of “Eastern Flower" is yours. When it is ready I shall personally deliver it to you.
May Bast smile upon you, always!"
Within the box rested a seated bronze votive of Bast, decorated in gold leaf with sparkling eyes as green as the Hap.

Basteta supervised the men unloading the cart with its precious pots of flowers, having them placed in her office garden. Absently counting the flowers she summoned a mounted guard. Handed a single, white bloom he was to present the bloom to the Overseer of the Perfumery and ask for her attendance at the palace.
"Now" Basteta thought "there are twenty gardenias so… five for the temple, ten for Ahmose, five for the palace. That should spread them out enough to determine a proper climate… seeds or cuttings? If all thrive, shall I send several plants to the Pera’a for Her pleasure? Or do we wait for the fragrance and send a plant and a bottle?"
Her husband’s hearty laugh sounded behind her, down the street at full gallop can the guard with Ahmose riding behind him. The young woman dove off the horse and ran to Basteta. "Nebet! Where did this come from!" This generated more laughter from Maximus, "You won’t laugh so when we can BUY Rome with this perfume," Ahmose replied tartly. The Roman wisely surrendered in the face of his wife’s laughter. Basteta handed over the message from Ryveria, then the mentioned her plans for dividing the gift. "We have enough iris bulbs to put in all three places and once the flowers fade we can divide the individual plants. I have promised Ryveria the first bottle and I will ask her to wear it when she next inspects her taverns. That should bring in hordes of customers."
While messages were sent to Ahmose’s assistants to prepare space to house the flowers, she checked Basteta’s locations, then gathered samples of buds and blooms for experimentation. The pots traveled to the perfumery as if the Pera’a rode in the cart and not plants. As evening fell both women met Ubastet at the Priests’ Tomb and placed a glass bowl upon it, in which floated three, perfect, flowers.

The son of Bast sat on the window ledge and watched his favorite shuffle papyrus and mutter to herself. "Miew!" no movement from the figure at the desk. Disgruntled he bounded onto the table, stuck his face up to hers and repeated the question, "Miew!" The Nebet tickled his chin and placed him on the floor. Message not received.
Once more into the fray, this time scattering papyrus in his wake. Again, a cuddle and back down on the floor. "Miew!" A moment of contemplation, care taken in positioning himself and woosh, thud, "Chakotay!" Scrolls hit the floor, ink splattered, and tea spilled. Nose to nose he repeated his message "Miew!"
Basteta sighed and gathered the cat up in her arms, the correctness of that action confirmed by a loud, rumbling purr. "Pashedbast?" she called on her way out of the office, "please take care of the paperwork for MarcusGaius Servilus and have someone clean up in here. I must stop and smell the lotuses." "And chase reed birds" Chakotay decided to himself, "maybe eat one?" Sitbastet looked around at the buildings for a place that might look like a medical building. She would have asked someone if there was someone to ask the street was very quiet because it was in the wee hours of the morning. All of Per-Bast was fast asleep. Unfortunately, there she stood without an escort and she had no where else to go, her directions were sketchy and she was not to sure if she was on the right street or not. Sitbastet was fresh out of medical school at Alexandria, she had work there in the temples of Serapis attending the sick and learning her skills from the priest. The chief priest had heard that Per-Bast need a doctor and Sitbastet was his first choice for the assignment. Eager to begin her solo career and to see the city of her namesake she left on the first caravan heading east, of course with her luck it landed her in Per-Bast in the wee hours while everyone is sleeping. Next time I travel in haste I will send a letter ahead requesting someone meet me. It was then she heard the hooves of a horse. She walked to the end of the street and greeted a peddler who's skin was wrinkled due to overexposure to the ray's of Ra. The peddler walked along side his horse leading him and the cart down the street. "Good sir, would you be so kind as to point out which building is the hospital." she asked.
Stopping the old man said, "My lady you are standing in front of it." Then the kind peddler said laughing. "If it had been a bird it would have nipped your nose off. What are you doing out this late anyway my lady." "I am the new Chief-Physician. I have just arrived in the city, that is why I am out at this hour." she replied. "The new Physician, praise Bast, and such a pretty one. Follow me and I will lead you to a guesthouse that is just at the end of this street. You will find good lodging there. The owner is a friend of mine and she will not mind me waking her."
So the two head down the street together.

I scurry back and forth between my per and my new architectural offices, which are still under construction -- I hope to host a grand opening in three or four days. I have also arranged for summer residency in the city of Iuni -- both architectural offices will follow the same plan and design.
I barely manage time to eat, or to meet with many people at this juncture -- I have of course met with the Mayor, Basteta, and with our new Tavern owner, but have not yet availed myself of the opportunity of dining on the premises yet.
I scratch the model for a geodesic pyramid, and go, for the nonce, with more conventional plans. Later, perhaps...

Gaius Marcus Maximus (called Maximus) walked through the dawning light, deep in thought. Letters arrived the past evening from friends and brought confirmation of events within the Roman Empire. The most disturbing had come from his sister-in-law Dalmatica, a popular hostess in Rome, and her shrewd political observations had chilled him. "Thank Mars, "he thought "that we have found both a new chief architect and physician for the nome"
"Now I can concentrate on matters my Lady has no experience with." Maximus paused at the door of a rooming house and sent a prayer to Bast as well for bringing his father safely to Per-Bast. If war was coming then a general who served with Julius Caesar was a priceless asset.
Sitbastet was awakened as a maid entered the room and bowed. "Physician, you presence is requested in the common room." With the maid’s assistance Sitbastet was readied for the day and followed the girl to the common room. A man stood on her arrival, bowed and introduced himself.
"What can the Nomarch’s husband want with me thought the physician, "Neb is the Nebet Basteta ill?"
"No, physician, it is I who must speak with you about the House of Life. Please sit, I will have food and drink brought so you may break your fast." The maid bowed and left the room on her errand.
Maximus watched her leave and then spoke quickly to Sitbastet. "I must trust you Physician with this news, the House of Life must be readied as quickly as possible and stocked against a possible war." He held up a hand to silence her protest. "It must be done so as not to cause comment and for now you are to speak of this to no one but me. There are things happening I don’t like and I will not allow recent history to repeat itself. A pair of city guards has been assigned to you and will assist you in all things." He finished as the maid returned, "I apologize on having to start your day so early, physician, please send to me if there is anything you require for the House of Life." Sitbastet was left to stare at her breakfast and wonder what she had gotten into by accepting her position.
Basteta Meritamen, Hatey-a' of the 18th Nome of Lower Egypt, Heret-tep-Per-Bast and Hemet-netjer weret net Bast walked through the palace halls as quickly as her tight gown would allow her. She had been commanded into the presence of her Pater Familias by his aide. Pashedbast’s face had gone red and the Weret Sesh had started to argue when his Nebet silenced both men and left the room. "There had better be a damn good reason for this or I shall have him thrown to the crocodiles" thought the Hatey-a’. "I understand Roman custom but my people do not. A very damned good reason."
The sight of two of her Roman guards, spears crossed to bar the entrance to her garden brought the Nomarch up short. The spears were instantly raised and she walked into garden and the meeting. Prepared to verbally flay her father-in-law, the look on her husband’s face changed anger to curiosity.
Maximus senior began "remember your anger, daughter, you must display it later and complain about rudeness. And then I suggest you have a loud fight with your husband and an equally loud reconciliation this evening. That will give the palace something to discuss and not to speculate on our business." He gestured towards several chairs, "please Basteta, sit. I--"
"Will handle it from here Father." Maximus crossed the room and knelt and his wife’s feet and took her hands into his. "Love, I know you trust the Pera’a with your life, does She feel the same about you?"
"WHAT!"
"Rome is covertly readying itself for a move against Kemet," her father-in-law began,"and not an outright war either. I have no real proof for the Pera’a but I know it is coming. We may have opened a door with Per-Bast."
"Father--"
"I know son, our people won’t believe that but the rest of Kemet? That bitch of Octavian’s is the real threat. Livia will stop at nothing to undermine us and then send her husband off to conquer Kemet. She rules Octavian and through him, Rome and the world."
"Bast defend us" moaned Basteta. :I went and offered an invitation to Romans to settle here!"Maximus hugged his wife hard, "Now that we have both an architect and a physician I can turn those duties over to them and I can concentrate on what I was really trained to do – intelligence."
Basteta stared at her husband "I married a spy?" "One of the best" replied Maximus senior. "And you must tell this to the Vizier when he arrives. Word must go to the Pera’a and she must be on her guard."
"Go see that architect now," said the General and motioning to his son to leave he sat next to his daughter-in-law. "Even then, we may only be a diversion. That fat snake in Petra is vulnerable to money or blackmail and Livia will know that as well. Or we are both part of a series of strikes aimed at weakening the Pera’a."
"What can we do?"
"Continue building this city. Fill the granaries. Pray to Bast. Wait and watch. Remember you are extremely angry with everyone named Maximus."

I regret to inform you that circumstances here in Dja'net and Imet have delayed my departure for Per-Bast. With the Opet festival rapidly approaching, I have decided to stay in Dja'net for it. I will depart after the festival for Per-Bast. If you are planning to attend the festival here, perhaps we could travel back to you city together.
In any event, I will leave for Per-Bast at the end of the festival. I look forward to visiting your city.

Maximus leaned in the doorway of the bedroom and watched his wife's attempt to pack. Basteta had rejected clothing and jewelry everywhere and was rushing between chests muttering to herself the whole time. "I still haven't heard if Ubastet is going with me, Pashedbast's family hasn't arrived--oh no, I have got to send someone to NeferPet for my gifts..."
"Why don't you worry about something important" the amused Maximus interjected, "such as whether Dja'net will still be standing after you, Tjia, Persenti, and Ryveria are done celebrating."
He ducked the sandal his wife had thrown and walked out, laughing quietly to himself.

“No he was impudent so I left him a great deal of work" Basteta smirked, “and threatened to go shopping while I was here. After all I must support the economy of your fair city and besides, I understand you have an excellent jeweler by the name of Tauret Senwosret."
“Nebet," both women turned back towards the pier to and were joined by uniformed guard, a sailor with burdened with luggage, and a young woman. Inclining his head to Basteta, the guard said, “Nebet Basteta, the General and Neb Maximus both gave me explicit instructions for safeguarding your person. I must accompany you on all such ventures."
Basteta sighed deeply, “see what I have to put up with, Tija? You’ll want to think long and hard before getting married." Arm in arm the nomarchs walked towards the waiting chariots, boarded, and then headed for the palace.

Pashedbast was truly happy at last his wife Kenamen and children Sitbastet and Ramose were at last with him. The brought with them an even larger surprise his mother-in-law Tuya. Tuya would not allow her only daughter and grandchildren to travel without her through lands unknown she said. Pashedbast thought she was only checking to make sure Per-Bast was all he said it was. Tuya presents did make it easier for the couple to travel alone to Dja'net to the Opet Festival with Mayor Basteta and other office members. Tuya and the children stayed in Per-Bast while Kenamen and Pashedbast went to the festival. Ubastet the priestess was there she and Kenamen and Bastet had developed a friendship on the voyage to Dja'net. Yes, Pashedbast was truly happy again.
