Qenbet guidelines Author: Thais Sobkneferu Date: 03-18-01 08:16 Please read the Guidelines for Qenbet which have been added to the story guide. Thais, Heir to the Crown
Date of the funeral of Pharaoh Ma'at-ib-Re Nesnut Author: Thais Sobkneferu Date: 04-16-01 12:19 The funeral of Per'aa Ma'at-ib-Re Nesnut will take place next Monday (April 23). If for some reason the chief participants in the funeral rites are unable to post on this date then the funeral will take place as soon as possible after that date.
Funeral Proceedings - what´s gonna happen Author: Mirjam Date: 04-18-01 05:40 The funeral of Maatibre will take place next Monday, 23rd. This is a bref layout of what happens during such an event in ancient Egypt and it is posted here for you all to help you with the background for your own postings: The whole processions is a giant one, as this is on a grand national scale. It all starts out at the palace and moves through Waset, across the Hap and up into the rocks where the tomb is situated. The mummy will be pulled on a sledge in a great procession throught the streets of Waset where everyone can see it. First in this procession walk hired female mourners crying and wailing, ripping their clothes etc. Next comes family and friends, dignitaries, and officials. Flowers, amulets and other offerings can be brought and laid down by the tomb. Around the sledge on which the mummy coffin is placed, walk priests who waft incence and spray purified water to purify the path. Behind the sledge is the canopic shrine being carried. This is where the mummified body organs are kept. Last comes servants carrying everything that the deceased will need in the Afterlife, like food, household items, furniture, shabti figures and jewellery. It is all the same things Maatibre used in her life. The whole procession and everyone is ferried over the Hap (the Nile) and proceeds to the tomb which is cut in the rocks outside of the city, beyond the fertile strip of land. At the tomb there is the Opening of the Mouth ceremony going to be performed by the new Per A´a and assisted by the lector priest. It is a ceremony intended to reopen the eyes, ears, mouth and make the limbs of the body moveable again, so that the ka (soul) can return to the body and it can be reborn in the Afterlife. After that, it is the time to say farewell and the coffin is placed in the tomb along with all the furniture, food etc, and the funeral is over. It was the custom for family members to go to the tomb regularly and offer bread and beer so that the deceased might 'live forever'. You can see an image of the sledge with the mummy coffin: (center image: coffin) the canopic shrine: (center image canopshrine) and the mourners at the tomb: (center image: mourners) If any questions, as usual I´m happy to be of help. Let´s all make this into a grand occasion...;)
How to get to the tomb Author: KaRa Date: 04-18-01 06:44 Attachment: Map_of_Waset.gif There are 6 ferry ports to use if you don't have your own boat or are reluctant to swim. Other than that, when she was alive, Ma'atibre Nesnut gave me permission to put an x on the map to mark her tomb. Attachment missing
RE: How to get to the tomb Author: KaRa Date: 04-18-01 07:10 You can see the ferry locations here. The ferrys operate during the daylight hours and the fare is one qite for a child two qites for an adult. Animals and baggage are rated at the whim of the ferry office.
RE: Funeral Proceedings - some questions Author: Ahktenar Date: 04-18-01 10:13 The post by Mirjam on the funeral is great, but I have some questions. What about Prince Djedibre? He too is believed dead, although no body has been found. If memory serves (no guarantees with my memory *s*), if there was no body, a ka statue was used. Where and when should a funeral be held for the prince? I recall reading about young children being buried with their mothers, often resting on their chests. Should the ka statue be buried in the same ceremony as Maatibre? In the same tomb? I have the same questions about her sister too. We do have a body there. Although it isn't really her, we believe that it is. I don't think that she would be buried in the same tomb, unless Maatibre wished it.
RE: Funeral Proceedings - some questions Author: Nesnut Date: 04-18-01 11:01 My sister was quite young, Anit, I believe. Sure put her in my tomb. But I do have a question... did anyone ask me if I wanted to be totally for real all out dead? *smile* I only remark on it since it's usual to consult with people before killing them off. *grin* However, I must admit I'm rather touched by my big funeral. I'll be sure to watch with great interest.
RE: Funeral Proceedings - some questions Author: Mirjam Date: 04-19-01 02:05 I seem to recall I talked to you about this at a number of times, dear Akh Nesnut. As far as I have understood, it is planned for both Djedibre and Anit to reside together with you. I´ll make sure to pour you a good libation and to put my heart into my prayers for you. ;) Your Most Mournful kheret-heb-nesew Nebet Mirjam
RE: Funeral Proceedings - some questions Author: Basteta-Tiye Date: 04-19-01 06:49 Well, dear Nesnut, somebody needs to be parked in your tomb while you are off making out with with the King of Punt or was that Kush? Whoever the poor dear is, she is getting a terrific funeral while you are having a beer on the terrace and laughing at those poor souls doing all that royal work in Waset. Great Royal Wife Basteta-Tiye
RE: Funeral Proceedings - some questions Author: Ahktenar Date: 04-19-01 07:37 Basteta is right. We do need someone in the tomb. You can't very well crown a new king without some "proof" that the previous one is no more. The plot line has been that two bodies were found that have been identified as Nesnut and Anit. They were badly mangled to the point that positive identification wasn't possible. No body was found for the prince at all. The IDs were made on circumstantial evidence. Now, we know that a servant was mistaken for the sister. This will come to light eventually when she regains her memory or someone recognizes her. This may cast doubts on the other body found, but the new king will be firmly on the throne by then. With these doubts, Nesnut could return and try to claim her throne. Or pretenders could claim to be her and try to take the throne. (Civil war anyone?) Or the government could coverup any possible mention that the body might not be hers. (conspiracy lovers could have fun here). No body for the prince means that he could come back as an adult, or under Roman/Parthian/Kushite protection while a child. Or a pretender claiming to be be him could show up (it's happened before). The idea was to leave things open for a variety of scenarios. *g* However, the country would need a state funeral.
RE: Funeral Proceedings - some answers Author: KaRa Date: 04-19-01 07:54 Remember when they cut off Prince Djedibre's youthlock and sent it off to the palace with the ransom note? Use that. The AE valued things like that. There was a lock of hair from someone in Tut's tomb. Use that and a ka statue that I donated in my Djedibre post and don't forget the mummified pet baboon that was Djedibre's pet who was slain during the abduction. Now to the matter of asking Nesnut's permission to kill her off.....so what? you can always unkill yourself and cause a whole lot of interesting story making. You can come back as your Ka viewing the funeral, of course you'll have to wait until after they open your mouth, or you can come up with a mystery of why someone found your boat and dressed up in your clothes while you were taking a stroll farther inland and being entertained by a tribe of interesting Egyptian like people or whatever. Isn't there a traditional feast after a funeral? I want to know what is on the state's menu for lunch please. I like Nesnut and the other deceased members of the funeral party but I regret that I cannot bare my bosom at the ceremony because I sunburn easily. I hope Your Osiris Majesty understands. ;)
RE: Funeral Proceedings - The Menu Author: Djebawti Date: 04-19-01 10:05 Check this! I found the menu! It was hidden in the great wife´s office in the palace! *grin*
Starters Roasted Chick Peas with Nuts and Seeds Broad Beans with Garlic Onions Spiced with Cumin Main Courses Roasted Duck stuffed with Garlic and Olives Lamb with Lemon and Garlic Beef with Spicy Sauce Desserts Fresh Fruits Dates and Figs Sweet Semolina Cakes To all courses are served bread and salad. Please bring your own drinks. Please note that meal starts only after doors to tomb have been closed! (Sorry, no fish - there are too many priests present *g*)

RE: Funeral Proceedings - The Menu Author: Djedi Thutmose Date: 04-19-01 19:03 I'll be there! Afterwords we can paint the town. I wonder what the coronation will be like. I think it will be a doubleheader.
Royal Seating Arrangements Author: Thais Sobkneferu Date: 04-20-01 04:45 I found this piece of torn papyrus in the Royal Apartments, the Per'aa must have dropped it. I get to sit next to Prince Brat. I can hardly wait! *grin* Royal Table The Pharaoh in the centre, on his left the Heir, Princess Thais and on his right, the Great Royal Wife, Basteta-Tiye. Next to the Great Royal Wife will sit Queen Amaunet and Princess Aschere. Prince Ptolemy will sit to the left of Princess Thais and next to Prince Ptolemy will sit the Grand Vizier. I'm hoping to find the rest of the seating plan and will let you know if I do.
RE: Funeral Proceedings - some questions Author: Jonamun Date: 04-20-01 09:00 This is perhaps a question on menus as much as on funeral proceedings, but will there be a list posted on who else we get to knock off without consultation? Kaptah always get to do the coolest killings! :-) I wanna splash some red too!! *petulant sulking faces* Can I kill? Just a little bit? Pleeeeeeeease?
RE: Funeral Proceedings - some questions Author: Djebawti Date: 04-20-01 09:51 Ohyeah, great!! Then I FINALLY can become a soldier... Hey, Jonamun!! I can help you! I can help..... No, he´s already gone...
I would like to be a Mourner Author: ShaReTra Sobkneferu Date: 04-22-01 23:45 It is my profession and I would like the chance to do it. Please and thanks
RE: I would like to be a Mourner Author: Mirjam Date: 04-23-01 01:18 That is no problem. Just check the above posting called 'Funeral Proceedings - what´s gonna happen'. Then write your post from the viewpoint of being one of the mourners. Please note: The funeral doesn´t happen until Siamun-Re has posted his post about it. Then we all can follow up.
RE: The Coronation Author: KaRa Date: 05-05-01 07:37 I would like to know the date of the coronation and who attends it. If there is only a few clerics and a high priest involved for the actual coronation I wonder if there could be some other events like a procession throught the streets of Waset and a presentation to the people from the bridge of appearances and a banquet for the nobles which the non religious personnel could attend. This would give the regular Waset court people a chance to meet Basteta, Thais, Senenmut and the others that are now a part of the court. The non nobles will be happy to see a parade and get Qenbet currency thrown at them and they can sell memorabilia on the streets. These events can be a backdrop for everyone to participate in.
RE: The Coronation Author: Thais Sobkneferu Date: 05-05-01 10:58 KaRa, at the moment there is no set date for the coronation. All I can say is that it will take place within three weeks. I'm sorry that this is very vague but the details of the coronation have yet to be worked out. *smiles* As soon as the Royal Family and their advisors have an outline for the coronation we will post the details here.
RE: The Coronation Author: Mirjam Date: 05-07-01 06:08 The coronation now, briefly: The coronation involved a ritual purifying of the kingly person, several spoken texts on behalf of assorted deities which were present, and presentation of the two crowns. The actual rituals of the coronation will happen inside a temple with a lot of priesthood present. After that had been successfully performed, it was customary for all officials, nomarchs, and other holders of office, to parade before the king and assure him their allegiance. Next it was time to present the king to his people and to have him run three times around the city walls which symbolized that he had run around all over the Two Lands and was doing his 'Fathers´ Will' and is now taking possession of the country... All this might happen at another city, as the ancient kings often liked to show their preference to one place or another, for different reasons. There can absolutely be a presentation on the bridge, KaRa, at some point after the double crown has been placed at Per A´a´s greying head - may he not succumb to the weight! *g*
RE: The Coronation Author: KaRa Date: 05-07-01 07:29 Do we really have to have SiAmun-Re run around Waset three times? Mirjam, really, consider that Waset is a big place and that just to circuit it once one would have to walk across the hap twice. Would the ancient Egyptians reallymake a 65 year old man, who is otherwise in fair condition, RUN around Waset three times? I think he deserves the double crown if he can even take care of his two wives at his age.
The Coronation Date Author: Thais Sobkneferu Date: 05-07-01 08:52 The Coronation of the Per'aa Siamun-Re will take place in the city of Mennefer/Memphis on the 26th May.
RE: The Coronation Author: Mirjam Date: 05-07-01 12:12 Hahahaha! Let´s hope Mennefer is smaller then - or maybe one of the wives can run for him? The one who´s fittest? *grin* Or even better, perhaps Ptolemy can get some excercise for a change? *g*
RE: The Coronation Author: Tjeti Priest Date: 05-07-01 17:14 Mennefer? Doesn't that mean I need to be getting on a boat right now?
RE: The Coronation Author: Ahktenar Date: 05-07-01 18:29 We'll have to start organizing the court and a large chunk of the government on that boat too. *s* We need to get there in plenty of time to get things set up. As for running around the city, yikes! I've read that they now think that Memphis was the first city to reach a population of 1 million. For most of their history, Memphis was the largest city in the country. It must have been huge. During the sed festivals, they used poles that marked out a smaller course for the Pharaoh to run. It symbolized the same idea. Perhaps we could use this.
RE: The Coronation Author: KaRa Date: 05-07-01 20:34 I like the Heb sed type of pole marker mini course with this variation. Put it into an arena a la circus maximus. The tjatey will be at the starter line and Senenmut will remove the golden slippers. Tjeti will bless the event and Mirjam will make sure everyone is doing his job. When it is time to begin Ahktenar will shout, "PerAa, start your engines" and SiAmun Re will chase Basteta and Amaunet around the track three times like a greyhound chases a rabbit. If His Majesty does not have an ib attack and finishes KaRa, the royal architect, will hand a beautifully crafted floral ank to the tjatey to put around the PerAa's neck and a big silver cup with chilled wine in it to quench our monarch's thirst.
RE: The Coronation Author: Djedi Thutmose Date: 05-07-01 20:40 (Pssssst! Hey Djebawti! maybe we can help the pharaoh by putting some ants in his underkilt just before he runs. That would be very patriotic. Think how good master AmunRamesses danced with the dung beetle. Let's show the tjatey what good citizens we are. Contact me in my per, please.)
RE: The Coronation Author: Mirjam Date: 05-08-01 06:06 Using the pole is a great idea. We don´t want to risk an ib attack and losing another Per A´a already! Though I´d love to see that brat Ptolemy panting his way along the streets....*g* Let´s hope Per A´a is good at bow and arrow, after he has completed his running, he´s to shoot four arrows in four directions; north, south, west and east, thereby marking out his territory, while hymns are being sung. And of course there will be a banquet. The royals will supper inside a great festive hall and all of us others will have to stay in the courtyard. If we behave, maybe the royals will grace us with an appearance on a balcony overlooking the yard. Djebawti, my son, just offered he and his friend Djedi Thutmose to run the race for Per A´a. They could compete with Ptolemy, as they´re sure they´ll beat the royal brat before you can say 'ankh'. Says he.
RE: The Coronation Author: Djebawti Date: 05-08-01 06:14 Djedi! I´m not sure that´s a good idea... Mama was awfully pissed at me before she found out who had put the bug there... How about you and I help Per A´a and run in his place? Wouldn´t that be a good deed - he´s so old you´d think he´d collapse if you breathe too hard at him... uuuhhh......maybe I´d better ask Mama first....
RE: The Coronation Author: Thais Sobkneferu Date: 05-08-01 09:53 Mirjam don't worry I'll give the Per A'a some archery lessons. My little brother can hold the target up. I'm sure he won't be in any danger. *wicked grin* Balcony appearance...hmm how high is this balcony and is there a hand rail? Wouldn't it be tragic if Prince Ptolemy tripped over my foot and fell?
RE: Life In Qenbet VI Author: KaRa Date: 05-13-01 06:15 Does anyone have any website that offers information about pharaonic coronations and the attendant ceremonies? I'm fresh out, sorry.
RE: Life In Qenbet VI Author: Sekhmet Meritamen Date: 05-13-01 15:03 Hotep KaRa No, the coronation ceremonies I don't know of any websites. I do know that among our numbers we have several "experts" on the subject. There is Mirjam, SaAmun MeryAset, Tjeti and myself. :-) Ask away.
RE: The coronation Author: Ahktenar Date: 05-13-01 16:28 Mirjam still has the stuff she did for Maatibre. I believe that she's put them up as webpages. I don't know the URL though. Also, KaRa, oh chief archivist *g*, those posts should be in the archives. I think they are in LIQ IV. I'll have to look.
Got the URL Author: Ahktenar Date: 05-13-01 17:27 Thanks to Thais for finding it for me. Mirjam's pages are at http://www.philae.nu/PerAnkh/coron1.html
RE: Got the URL Author: Mirjam Date: 05-14-01 23:51 Thanks for posting it! I was planning to get it out any day but you beat me to it. Some extra explanation might be needed and I´ll try to get that done asap. :)
The Coronation Author: Mirjam Date: 05-16-01 05:13 Friends! :) Here´s some explanation for you of what happens at the coronation: Please note that this is an adapted version of what historical records are available. We will follow the Coronation of Maatibre from last year, which you all can inspect here and which you can refer back to when you write. I´m sorry the page is not fully changed to reflect the present situation, but the texts are the same and will serve well. If my time allows, I will add the titles of the new Per A´a - or maybe there is someone who want to contribute? ;) *looks around* 1.The coronation rituals are performed inside and outside of the Great Temple of Ptah in Menefer (Mempis), in the presence of Members of the Royal Family, the Priesthood, Nobles and Dignitaries of Upper and Lower Egypt. 2. Following Netjeru are represented in the temple by their priesthood: The Triad of Waset: Amun, Mut, Khonsu. The Triad of Mennefer: Ptah, Sekhmet, Nefertem. The Two Crowns: Nekhbet and Wadjet. The Lords of Upper and Lower Kemet: Heru and Set. 3. Purifying Per A´a: It all begins with a purifying rite which is repeated four times. Heru and Djehuty pours lifegiving water in the form of Ankhs over Per A´a, who is then symbolically 'reborn' from the Primeval Waters and can approach his Father Amun, who then offers Per A´a the crown. Next Per A´a is presented before the assembled deities, who make a long utterance - go here . It is quite beautiful. 4. Presentation to the people. Per A´a now goes out of the temple of Ptah to meet the people who has gathered in the courts. The priesthood and nobles follow after him. He is greeted and hailed by the crowd and great festivities and celebrations begin. 5. Presenting of the Double Crown. Back in the temple again, the high priests of Nekhbet and Wadjet greet Per A´a and present the Crown of Upper and Lower Egypt to him. Here it is. 6. Ceremony at the Dual Shrine - the actual crowning. In the temple are two shrines - one for the Crown of Upper Egypt, and one for the Crown of Lower Egypt. This is where the actual coronation takes place, this is where the Double Crown is placed on the head of Per A´a. There are utterances by the priesthood and Per A´a himself. Per A´a, accompanied by Nekhbet and Wadjet, Heru and Set, approaches first the Shrine of Upper Egypt, then the shrine of Lower Egypt. here and: here. 7. The closing rituals. Here are utterances spoken by Per A´a himself and the Lector Priest. go here. 8. After these have been concluded, Per A´a with Double Crown on his head and the crook and the flail in hand, is taken in procession around the city walls. It is here that it can be decided if the ritual running is going to happen, and by whom. I think that is up to Siamun´s discretion ;) The festivities continue for days - the whole city, which is the largest one in Kemet, accidentally, is in a daze. This is the time to cast away mourning and celebrate as the Two Lands have got a new Per A´a.
The Location of the Royal Court Author: Siamun-Re Date: 06-05-01 12:39 Greetings everyone; To prevent confusion, wanted to explain that now that the coronation has concluded, the royal court is moving. Your pharaoh was scheduled to make a tour of Lower Egypt but has decided to head for Alexandria. He and much of the court will stay there for the time being. Just hope that doesn't alarm our loyal subjects in Thebes. *Grin*
RE: The Location of the Royal Court Author: Mirjam Date: 06-05-01 15:16 Oh? Er, are there any loyal subjects still in Waset? *wild grin* Sorry, just had to! :-) *goes chuckling on her way*
Character Responses to Events Author: Basteta-Tiye Date: 06-12-01 03:51 This is an excellent place to post how our characters feel in general to current events so that others can use the information in their storylines. We don't always get all of this in our roleplay posts but would in real life. Basteta-Tiye, while being a child of the Delta, is not as Hellenistic as her husband. She favored the policy of bringing back the ancient culture of Kemet plans to continue as a balance to the Per'aa. One plan is to be a patron of the classic arts of Kemet and to help with the restoration of the ancient cities, temples, and monuments. She misses Per-Bast and her friends there terribly and continues to work on restoring the temple to Bast there. One of the forms of Bast is the Eye of Re, the protector of Kemet, and the Great Royal Wife sees herself in that role. She will do everything in her power to protect her home, her husband, and her daughter, Thais (Ptolemy is another story.) She is setting up a network among her friends in the Nomes and cities and has made an alliance with Queen Amaunet to further that goal. While being a Nomarch and the Imet-er-Mehew gave her experience in government the sheer amount of work in helping to rule Kemet and the politics of the court and her new family are overwhelming. Since the Per'aa has gifted her with her own audience hall, she has opened its doors to all of Kemet in hopes that those people unable to approach the Per'aa will come to her. Next?
ATTN: Iunu Gang and Per-Basters Author: Basteta-Tiye Date: 06-13-01 02:38 I need to speak with you all about a story line. I have lost my email addys due to a system crash so please send me a note at asrd1@earthlink.net so I can find you.
ATTN ALL: role play reminder Author: Basteta-Tiye Date: 06-13-01 04:48 With the current storylines becoming so convoluted please be very careful with details such as time and place. Also if you are including other players characters, however briefly, please check with that person before posting. There have been a few mistakes that have resulted in a great deal of confusion. Many people have been asking for details on various storylines and please understand that the authors may not be at liberty to divulge the information or are reserving some details for surprises. I have finally caught up again with all the role play posts and it was a great read. Thanks everyone! Basteta-Tiye Great Royal Wife

Latest post with huge troop movements... Author: Tjeti Priest Date: 07-17-01 13:04 It would be nice to welcome back an old member but I find the latest post by ioudith Ramesses to be inflammatory. Not only is she bringing in an unrealistic amount of troops through the cataracts (don't even start) but she is attacking one of my allies - did anyone discuss this with ioudith in advance? ioudith? Would it be a good idea to find out what people are planning before dropping a huge swarm of locusts into a carefully crafted plot that goes back months?
