The Qenbet Writers group is a place to learn more effective writing and historical role-play writing for the Qenbet novel. Mentoring, story critiques, research assignments, and group discussion participation are the tools used by the members to achieve these goals.

There are four different ways to participate in the group and as group leader I ask that everyone participate in the critiques though the other three are optional.

Critiques: Each time a member posts a story to the novel board you are to leave a message with feedback at either their home or via private email. Critiques are NOT to be posted here or discussed except in very general terms.

Mentoring: A list will be available of group members and those who have volunteered to mentor writers at various levels and on various subjects. Contact the member and ask if they will accept your posts for critiquing. Be understanding if your chosen mentor has real-life obligations or has already accepted several posts. When you post please be polite and thank your mentor in the end-notes. Mentors are listed under the various levels of assistance they can provide authors with their work.

Research Assignments: At times the members will be asked to write a short post on a topic. These will be short and may be assigned individually or to the whole group. An example would be to collect some Kemetic vocabulary words and post them for the group.

General Discussions: A topic can be proposed for general discussion by the group by any member, please start a new thread within the main topic so all the responses will be together. An example would be how authors collaborate on stories or long plots for the novel.

Group Courtesy Guidelines:
Always spell check your work before submitting a post to either your mentor or the novel board.

Reference source material including images and vocabulary words. URLs, title and author of book, title and date of video or movies are all acceptable. So many times information is posted on the Internet with no reference as to where the author obtained their information and the reader can neither verify nor explore further the ideas presented.

Writers must comply with posted Qenbet guidelines when writing especially used “adult” content.

To join or if you have questions please email Basteta-Tiye at asrd1@earthlink.net

Ancient Egyptian Pronunciation

It's good to know the written words, but it also is helpful to know how to say them.
This page gives a brief lesson in pronunciation of words and translation of heiroglyphs.

OK, I posted my response to this "assignment" in the original thread before it was deleted. Let me see if I can remember the words I put in that post.....

A lot of these I got from either reading other peoples' posts -- so I'm not exactly sure as to their accuracy. But I have a feeling that it's right. :-)

medu netjeru - "language (literal="words" ?) of the gods", the ancient Egyptian language.

em hotep nefer weret - "in great peace", I use it as a greeting.

em heset net Aset - "May you be in favor with
Isis", replace "Aset" with any other Netjer and it remains the same.

nefer-miau - "pretty kitty" (my own translation), I sometimes use it to refer to my kitty, Neferet. ;-) Or would it be miau-nefer?

I don't think the thread is stringing the responses to the assignment together.

I repled to this message for both this one and my previous one, and as you can see, it didn't keep them with the original message. :-(

Seems that has been disabled so please title your posts to include part of the topic to which they refer.

Discussion: Planning posts with another writer

Author: Basteta-Tiye
Date:   07-07-01 11:53

Let’s start with this as our first discussion topic since there is quite a lot of collaborating going on with the current political crisis. For myself, I work one of two ways, either playing “catch” or planning out each step. Each method has its rewards and drawbacks to consider before deciding on which one to use for your posts.

Catch allows each author a greater amount of freedom to respond to current events and to expand on the storyline. You get a good look at how other writers perceive your character and their additions enrich the picture you have painted. This introduces ideas that haven’t occurred to you but may be obvious to others and these surprises in plot and details make the writing process exciting and fun. I did this with Anhkbastet before AS went down and since we had talked quite a bit before hand, all of that knowledge went into the responses. It became a contest to toss each other a juicy idea to run with as we continued to write and I was able to have Anhkbastet deal with certain plot elements instead of having Basteta do so. In the end we ended up with a rich story line that we will continue to use here at PH. The draw back to this of course is that it doesn’t work as well with novice role-play writers or with new acquaintances.

For those situations planning your posts work much better but the amount of planning can differ with each writer or story. At the moment I have a joint post being “assembled” with Thais, Alexandros, and Ahktenar. Since so many writers are involved here and we have a great deal of ground to cover we are starting by creating an outline. I expect that once we know what all has to be discussed and in what order this will become a round-robin process, much like what was done on the House of Music series in Iunu. The post will just make the rounds until all the gaps are filled in and everyone in satisfied with it before it gets posted to the novel board.

Well well, well!

I announce that I will be offline for a period and what do I find when I come back?

My posts about writing in Qenbet have been deleted. I am sure you had a good reason, whoever did this. *Looks meaningfully at Basteta*

Now why didn´t I find my posts copied and posted in my per with an explanation as to why this was done? Should a group leader not take such a thing upon him/herself to save the members who are unable to do this for themselves, from finding their postings gone and no explanation?

Maybe you would be so kind as to give an explanation directly here, as I heard that there was only 24 hours given before posts would be deleted. Much good did that do me, as I was miles away from a computer at the time. Which I dutyfully had announced so that people would know about it.

Not that the content might have amounted to anything much, but the way it was handled is simply not ok.

In fact, I had it all copied and compiled a post since it all went together (left headers on) and the bulk of it was your post but Tjeti erased all the topics after several weeks even though I told him exactly what to delete. he did apologize but since I had to reformat my drive, my copy is also gone. I really did have it all covered and we still lost it. I am very sorry, Mirjam, and no offense was intended. I hope you will join the new group.

If anyone saved a copy PLEASE repost it!

to serve as i can. everyone feel free to contact me for any help i can give-what i can't answer would be enough to send me scurrying for new things to know!!

a small suggestion-
perhaps we can do a monthly thing, an assignment. nothing gets a writer writing like having a reason-
things like writing a paragraph in kemetic, 'a day in the life' kinda thing-
nothing too big or major.
personally i would find it difficult to write a paragraph or short that consisted of all dialogue-
perhaps assignments that would challenge but not overwhelm?

just some thoughts----

Em hotep Akhenheru,
A new web page for the Writing group sounds great, when you've finished post the url here and I'll add the link to VK.
And you're right the QWG needs a new leader since Iufen left. I've been away so I'm not sure if Teti has discussed it with you but I think it would be ok for you to decide among yourselves if you haven't done so already :-) Just let me know. *g*

Do we have a central place (ie link, topic, webpage) where we can go and be counted (ie counter)? Suggestion: perhaps we should include in the cenus our name (PH only), member level, nome, city, and occupation.
